Chemistry Faculty position
Position Summary:
Vanguard University invites applications for a full-time faculty position to begin Fall 2026. The applicants must have demonstrated teaching ability, commitment to mentoring a diverse student population, and a commitment to working with and encouraging diversity. Vanguard University seeks professionals of Christian faith who are committed to integration of faith and learning in their respective fields.
The faculty member will teach courses and develop curriculum within the Department of Biology, which offers a chemistry minor and chemistry courses. Chemistry coursework supports multiple programs, including Biology, Kinesiology and Nursing. The Department of Biology is housed within the College of Arts and Sciences, which champions a holistic, Christian liberal arts education. Vanguard faculty are committed to excellence and to integrating faith in their respective disciplines. Founded in 1920, Vanguard has been in Costa Mesa, not far from the Pacific Ocean, since 1950. Today nearly half of our undergraduate students are Hispanic and Vanguard is a federally-designated Hispanic Serving Institution.
Vanguard University offers both tenure track and term faculty contracts; the type of contract offered will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications at the time of hire.
Courses to be taught may include:
• General Chemistry lecture and lab
• Physical Chemistry lecture and lab
• Instrumental Analysis lecture and lab
• Other chemistry courses as needed
Essential Functions:
• Teach above-mentioned coursework in Chemistry.
• Experience with using NMR and GC in an educational context.
• Challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and thinking.
• Collaborate with department faculty in curriculum implementation, student support, and continuous program improvement.
• Develop and assist in the implementation of department-level assessment of student learning.
• Facilitate the learning of first-generation college students and incorporate culturally-relevant pedagogy within the classroom.
• Mentor students in development of their research projects, and their critical evaluation of peer-reviewed articles and other published sources.
• Initiate and cultivate an undergraduate research program that incorporates students.
• Participate in academic activities at the program and University levels.
• Engage with the university community by serving on faculty committees, collaborating in student retention efforts and supporting other academic disciplines or extracurricular activities.
• Engage in professional organization activities and scholarly work
Minimum Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in Chemistry.
• Candidates must have evidence of a strong commitment to undergraduate education.
• Ability to interact successfully within a multicultural environment and work harmoniously with students, colleagues, and the community.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Experience in using learning management systems to augment instruction.
• Strong interpersonal skills that can produce effective instructor-student interactions in one-on-one (student advising and student research, for example) and in group (classroom or seminar) sessions.
• Experience in the design, execution, and analysis of research that include student research projects in area of specialty.
• Possess a vibrant Christian faith, and commitment to an academically rigorous integration of faith and learning.
Salary:
Full-time position. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience. Highly qualified candidates may be considered for an appointment to an endowed professorship with additional compensation.
Assistant Professor: $58,242 to $78,336 Associate Professor: $67,932 to $91,494 Professor: $78,846 to $109,548
Placement at an appropriate rank (e.g., Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) and initial salary are dependent upon education and experience and are based on Vanguard's faculty compensation schedule. The upper range is reserved for candidates who demonstrate the highest level of proficiency within a particular rank. Vanguard University also offers a very competitive and generous benefits package.

2. Philosophy of Christian Education and Role of a Christian University. Explain what you believe to be the elements essential to the educational theory & practice of a Christian University.
3. Integration of Faith, Teaching and Scholarship. Explain how you integrate your faith with your discipline & in your teaching and scholarship.
